Aldeburgh Scallop

Aldeburgh

River Deben & Woodbridge Tide Mill

Out & About

Orford is just 2 miles to the south, with its general stores, butcher, Post Office, pubs and the famous fish restaurant The Butley Orford Oysterage, plus the renowned Orford Castle (English Heritage). There is also access to the Quay and the River Ore, with ferries to Orford Ness (National Trust) a remarkable military and natural history "island", as well as Havergate Island (RSPB).

Snape can be found 3 miles north, with its world famous concert hall The Maltings. This is the venue of many prominent events for the Aldeburgh festival of which composer Benjamin Britten was a founder member. Snape also has art galleries, gift shops, tea-rooms, walks and boat trips along the River Alde, as well as pubs and restaurant amenities.

Further along the tranquil Heritage Coast, you will find Thorpeness and Aldeburgh with their splendid beaches. These picturesque seaside locations are always a great day out no matter what age you are and if Golf is your interest, they both benefit from full courses.

Away from the beach, you can discover the charm and vastness of Thorpeness Meare boating lake, the intriguing House in the Clouds and Thorpeness Windmill (Suffolk Coast & Heaths). In addition to Aldeburgh's quaint shops and excellent restaurants, you can now experience the recently unveiled 12-foot high Scallop beach sculpture by Suffolk artist Maggi Hambling, in tribute to its most famous former citizen, Benjamin Britten.

Other well-known visitor attractions in the area include the Anglo-Saxon Royal burial grounds at Sutton Hoo (National Trust), the nature reserve at Minsmere (RSPB), Framlingham Castle (English Heritage) and Easton Farm Park.

The market town of Woodbridge is 12 miles away and boasts many pubs, restaurants, shops and sports facilities including an indoor swimming pool and golf courses. The River Deben features the sailing club, meandering walks and one of the oldest Tide Mills in the U.K - the source of inspiration for thousands of artists and photographers. There are Greater Anglia (Abellio) trains to Ipswich and Lowestoft with intercity connections to London Liverpool Street, Norwich, Cambridge and Peterborough.
